Kyphoplasty Treatment in Rancho Mirage

Minimally invasive pain relief treatment

What is Kyphoplasty Treatment?

At Desert Pain Specialists we offer kyphoplasty as a minimally invasive procedure to treat painful compression fractures in your spine. These compression fractures can lead to severe back pain and a hunched curve in your spine. Kyphoplasty treatment prevents the formation of this curve and allows for back pain relief. This treatment requires no surgical incision and is done with either local or light sedation. After an hour, you’ll be able to walk out from this same-day back pain treatment
Our main goals when performing kyphoplasty is to help you achieve the following:
  • Eliminating or at least reducing your back pain
  • Stopping further progression of the curve in your spine
  • Restoring the normal alignment of your spine

Candidates for Kyphoplasty

You can qualify for kyphoplasty if you are suffering from back pain caused by compression fractures in your spine. This treatment is for those looking for back pain relief and to straighten their back posture. During your visit to Desert Pain Specialists, we will check for vertebral fractures and let you know if a kyphoplasty procedure is recommended.

Treatment Process for Kyphoplasty Procedure

During the kyphoplasty treatment, Dr. Lai will use a continuous imaging X-ray known as fluoroscopy to accurately guide where the tube needs to be inserted into your back. After it has been inserted, the tube now acts as a path through the back into the fractured vertebrae. A small balloon is meticulously placed into the fractured vertebrae and then carefully inflated so as to create space inside the fractured bone. As the balloon inflates, it helps restore the bone to its normal position and creates a space inside the fractured bone. Once the balloon is removed, this space is then filled with a sturdy and cement-like material known as polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). This material quickly hardens, strengthening your spine’s stability and bringing you back pain relief.
